Conservative Party of Canada | October 16, 2016

The Leader of the Official Opposition and Interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Rona Ambrose, issued the following statement to mark the celebration of the of Sukkot:

“This evening will mark the beginning of the week-long festival of Sukkot, a cheerful holiday which offers a time for a special mitzvah to celebrate and rejoice.

“Jewish communities in Canada and across the globe will gather with family and friends to celebrate the start of Sukkot, which commemorates the forty-year period in which the ancient Israelites wandered in the Sinai desert following their exodus from slavery in Egypt.

“The literal translation of Sukkot – “booths” – is a reference to the provisional desert shelters in which the Israelites dwelt. To recall this journey, Jewish families and friends will gather for prayer, festive feasts, along with building and decorate their own sukkot, in which they eat meals and often sleep during the seven days of the holiday.

“With this holiday’s quick succession to Yom Kippur, the most solemn day in the Jewish year, Sukkot offers a holiday full of celebration and community. Sukkot is an opportunity for all Canadians to celebrate the freedom we enjoy here in Canada.

“I offer my best wishes to everyone in Canada and around the world celebrating Sukkot.

“Chag Sukkot Sameach!”
