Andrew Scheer’s plan to support police forces to protect our communities

December 3, 2018

WINNIPEG, MB – The Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, the Honourable Andrew Scheer, today unveiled the third and final part of his plan for A Safer Canada.

Called Equipping Police to Protect, part three of Scheer’s plan contains six new policy measures to provide police forces with the resources they need to keep our communities safe.

“The men and women of our police forces work incredibly hard to keep us safe,” Scheer said. “We owe them a debt of gratitude for what they do – but more importantly, we owe them the resources they need to do their jobs.”

The latest data show that Canada’s murder rate is at its highest level in almost a decade, while gang-related murders have increased every year for the past three years.

“Across the country, people are telling us they are fed up with Justin Trudeau’s inaction, and are happy to see Conservatives offering practical policy solutions to this growing problem,” said Scheer.

The six proposals in Equipping Police to Protect are:

  • New funding to fight gangs
  • Create a Police Infrastructure Grant program
  • Better information sharing to solve gun crimes
  • Stronger background checks for gun licences
  • More support to keep young people from joining gangs
  • Making prison time meaningful

“Justin Trudeau’s failure to act has broken the trust Canadians should have in their justice system – and this failure has real consequences,” Scheer said. “Canadians are more and more worried about the safety of their streets. My plan for A Safer Canada will restore Canadians’ faith in the system once again.”
