Liberals Must End their Carbon Tax Cover-Up: Poilievre

Conservative Party of Canada | April 22, 2018

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – The Honourable Pierre Poilievre, Conservative Shadow Minister for Finance, is calling on the Liberal government to end their carbon-tax cover-up and to finally tell Canadians how much more their families will pay when it comes into effect. The Budget Implementation Act, Bill C-74, contains 200 pages on the new federally-imposed carbon tax.

“Justin Trudeau is trying to ram through his carbon tax, which will raise the price of home heating, electricity and groceries, but he has failed to tell Canadians how much this tax hike will cost or what it will achieve,” said Mr. Poilievre. “Over the last two years, Conservatives have asked the government dozens of times to tell us how much a middle-class family will pay in new taxes and each time the Liberals have refused to tell Canadians.”

Multiple requests for information filed with the government have resulted in the release of documents that have key information blacked out. The “potential impact of a carbon price on households’ consumption expenditures across the income distribution” was withheld, as was the “economic impacts from various mitigation options for greenhouse gas emissions,” projections for “real GDP,” and “GHG reductions.”

“Canada’s Conservatives have repeatedly asked how much the Liberals’ carbon tax will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but the Prime Minister and the Minister of Environment have refused to answer,” said Mr. Poilievre. “If the government won’t tell us the cost of their carbon tax and can’t demonstrate how it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, how can they expect Canadians to pay this new tax?”

In order to hold Justin Trudeau accountable, Conservatives put the following motion on notice: “That the House call on the government to table how much the proposed federal carbon tax of $50 per tonne will cost a median Canadian family, and to do so by May 1st, 2018.”

“Clearly the Liberals know how much this tax grab will cost Canadian families,” said Mr. Poilievre. “That is why we put a motion on notice to finally end the carbon tax cover-up and force the Liberals to tell Canadians how much their family will pay in higher costs if this hike is passed.”
