Andrew Scheer issues a statement commemorating Tisha B'Av
OTTAWA – July 31, 2017
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Andrew Scheer, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and Leader of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement:
"This evening at sundown marks the beginning of Tisha B’Av, an annual day of fasting and remembrance in the Jewish calendar.
“Named for the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av, Tisha B’Av is a commemoration of the many historic calamities experienced by the Jewish people, primarily the destruction of the First Temple by the Babylonians in 586 BCE, and Second Temple, by the Romans more than six centuries later in 70 CE.
"Known as the ‘saddest day’ in the Jewish history, this occasion offers all Canadians an opportunity to recognize the many challenges religious minorities face, and to reaffirm our commitment to combat oppression.
“I ask all Canadians to extend their best wishes to the Jewish people as they observe this solemn and sacred day, and to reflect on what unites us as Canadians.
“On behalf of the Conservative Party and caucus, I wish all those commemorating today a time of meaningful reflection, and celebrate the success that pluralism and diversity has brought to Canada.
“Have an easy and meaningful fast.”
