Conservative Party of Canada | July 30, 2018

Regina, SK – The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada's Conservatives and the Official Opposition, issued the following statement on the upcoming retirement of the Hon. Peter Van Loan:

“Over his 14 years in office, the Hon. Peter Van Loan has been a respected and leading figure in our Party and our Conservative movement.

“Peter was named to cabinet months after our previous Conservative government was first sworn in and served at the Cabinet table for the remainder of our mandate. As the longest-serving Conservative Government House Leader, Peter ensured the passage of almost 200 bills, including top Conservative priorities such as balancing the budget, cutting taxes and getting tough on crime. Additionally, he served in a variety of other critical portfolios, including Public Safety and International Trade.

“A strong voice for his constituency of York—Simcoe from his first election in 2004, Peter's commitment to delivering for the men and women he represents earned him their trust, winning him re-election in 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2015.

“A grassroots Conservative through and through, Peter's wide experience, knowledge and energy made him an integral part of our Caucus. As he retires from the House of Commons and returns to the practice of law, he will be missed in Ottawa. On behalf of the Official Opposition and Canada's Conservatives, I thank Peter for his exemplary service to our movement and I wish him and his family all the best as he begins the next chapter of his life.”
