Andrew Scheer: Justin Trudeau must be clear about supply management

Conservative Party of Canada | June 5, 2018

Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of the Official Opposition and Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, issued the following statement today regarding the protection of supply management in the agriculture and agri-food sector:

“The Conservative Party has always worked hard to ensure the development and prosperity of Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector. That is why Conservatives believe that Justin Trudeau’s comments on the American network NBC regarding Canada’s flexibility to ensure better US access to Canadian markets, including for milk, eggs and poultry, are totally unacceptable.

“The Prime Minister has claimed time and time again, including in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, that he supports supply management. But, he speaks quite differently when he’s talking to the U.S. Justin Trudeau’s NBC interview proves that he is not being honest and transparent with Canadian farmers.

“Maintaining supply management is critical to the survival of Canada’s rural communities that rely on milk, egg and poultry producers. The government must come clean and tell Canadians the truth about the current negotiations with the U.S.”
