Andrew Scheer, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, issues statement on Ukrainian Independence Day
August 24, 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, ON - Andrew Scheer, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and Leader of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement on Ukrainian Independence Day:
“Twenty-six years ago today, Ukraine became an independent nation. After decades of Soviet rule, Ukrainians seized the opportunity to determine their own fate.
“As the first western country to recognize Ukrainian independence, Canada has a special friendship with the people of Ukraine, forged by the successive generations of Ukrainian immigrants to our country.
“On Ukrainian Independence Day, we are reminded of the fortitude, bravery and determination of the Ukrainian people as they continue the struggle for their nation’s freedom against Russia’s illegal military aggression. For the third year, millions of Ukrainians from Crimea, Sevastopol and the Donbas region mark Independence Day under military occupation, or as refugees fleeing a war zone. Yet under these strenuous conditions, Ukrainians have not wavered in the defence of their country, and their courage is an inspiration to those seeking freedom, justice and the rule of law around the world.
“We will always stand with Ukraine in their fight for freedom. Our previous Conservative government took practical steps to help Ukraine, including deploying military trainers, providing military aid and imposing wide-ranging sanctions against Russian officials responsible for the war. We continue to call for further measures, including the provision of lethal military aid.
“On behalf of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, please accept my best wishes on Ukrainian Independence Day.
“З Днем Незалежності України!”
