Andrew Scheer, the Leader of the Conservative Party and Official Opposition, issues statement to mark Khushiali (Imamat Day)

OTTAWA, ON – July 11, 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Andrew Scheer, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and Official Opposition, issued the following statement:

“Every year on this day, Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims in Canada and around the world celebrate the anniversary of the ascension of His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan to become the Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims.

“To Ismaili Muslims, Imamat day is an occasion to reaffirm their gratitude to the Aga Khan for his compassion and guidance, and an opportunity to renew their commitment to their faith.

“The Aga Khan shares a special partnership with Canada. Toronto was selected as home to the new Aga Khan Museum, and the Center for Pluralism was built in Ottawa. As a champion of pluralism and human rights advocate, the Aga Khan was the first spiritual leader to address both houses of Parliament, and was rewarded our countries highest honour in being named an honorary citizen by then Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

“The work of his highness with the Aga Khan Development network has made monumental advancements in the areas of poverty alleviation, education, and providing access to health care and clean drinking water for over 5 million people a year.

“On behalf of the Official Opposition and Conservative Party of Canada, I would like to congratulate the Ismaili community in Canada celebrating this occasion, and offer my warmest congratulations to His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan on the 60th anniversary of his accession as Imam.

“Khushiali Mubarak.” -30- For more information:
