OTTAWA, ON - Andrew Scheer, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and Leader of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement today:

“Today, on the 70th anniversary of India’s Independence, I would like to extend my best wishes to everyone celebrating India’s independence.

“This joyous occasion is celebrated throughout Indo communities around the world with parades, flag raising ceremonies, kite flying, and other cultural events. Here in Canada, similar celebrations will take place in communities across the country.

“Canada and India share a longstanding, warm friendship and partnership built on democracy and peace.

“Canada is home to over a million Indo-Canadians who have helped shape our society for the better and have contributed tremendously to Canada’s success in areas of art, trade, technological advancements, and education. I encourage all Canadians to join today’s celebrations and to learn more about Indo-Canadians’ tremendous contributions to Canada’s success.

“Once again, on behalf of the Conservative Party and Official Opposition, I would like to extend my best wishes to everyone celebrating India Independence Day.

“Happy India Independence Day!”
