Canada’s Conservatives Issue Statement in Response to Morneau – Notley Meeting

Conservative Party of Canada | April 11, 2018

Ottawa, ON – Shannon Stubbs, Conservative Shadow Minister for Natural Resources, today issued the following statement in response to Minister Morneau’s comments regarding the Trans Mountain Expansion Project:

“Earlier this year, Canada’s Conservatives called on the Prime Minister to prioritize the construction of the federally-approved Trans Mountain Expansion Project and to present his plan by Thursday, February 15, 2018. Instead of taking action, the Liberals defeated that motion and he and every Liberal MP voted against supporting Trans Mountain.

“When the Prime Minister visited British Columbia recently, he failed to persuade BC's Premier of the importance of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. Now, he and his Liberal Ministers are refusing to tell Canadians how they plan to get this project built, or even what options they are considering.

“Prime Minister Trudeau is failing Canada’s energy industry and Canadian workers. In the last two years, he has said Canada must “phase out” the oil sands, vetoed the approved Northern Gateway pipeline and killed the Energy East pipeline. The Trans Mountain Expansion is the latest in a pattern of multi-billion-dollar energy investments and projects at risk, cancelled, or abandoned under Justin Trudeau’s watch. And it's only going to get worse when the Liberals ram through their new energy regulations.

“The Liberals could build certainty and confidence in the Canadian energy sector by lifting their oil tanker ban, reversing the offshore oil and gas drilling ban in the North, and eliminating their job-killing carbon tax that will put Canada at a competitive disadvantage. The Liberals could also remove the upstream and downstream emissions condition for pipelines that they don’t apply to foreign oil or to major infrastructure projects in other sectors.

“The Canadian energy sector produces the most environmentally and socially responsible oil and gas in the world. Canadians can count on Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives to keep fighting for resource development, and for the jobs and opportunities it creates.”
