Canadians Are Paying for Justin Trudeau’s Pipeline Failures: Stubbs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Vancouver, BC – Shannon Stubbs, Conservative Shadow Minister for Natural Resources, today released the following statement regarding the Parliamentary Budget Officer’s report on the value of the Trans Mountain Pipeline:

Today, we learned the true cost of Justin Trudeau’s failure on Trans Mountain. Not only did the Liberals spend $4.4 billion of taxpayers’ money to purchase a pipeline that a private company was willing to build without a single tax dollar, they failed in their negotiations, spending a billion more than what the independent Parliamentary Budget Officer estimated it was worth. The Liberals have no plan to actually get the expansion built, and every year of delay increases the costs by hundreds of millions of dollars.

“When the Liberals purchased the Trans Mountain Pipeline they guaranteed the purchase would get the pipeline built. Three years after approval, there is no start date in sight.

“Canadians cannot afford to continue paying for Justin Trudeau’s failure to build pipelines in Canada. More than 100,000 people in the energy sector have already lost their jobs and thousands more are in limbo until the construction on the expansion starts. Every day construction is delayed further undermines Canada’s reputation as a stable and predictable place to invest - that’s why the majority of Canadians believe the failure to build pipelines is a national crisis.

“The PBO has not only confirmed that Trudeau likely overpaid for the pipeline project but also that it is rapidly losing value.

“This means taxpayers are on the hook for a depreciating asset that the Liberals have no desire to actually develop.

“In other words, Justin Trudeau bought this pipeline to make sure it never gets built.

“He continues to put forward policies that are killing Canada’s energy sector. His ‘no new pipelines bill’, Bill C-69, is chasing away even more investment in Canada’s oil and gas sector and costing oil workers good paying jobs.

“The reality is that this is all part of Justin Trudeau’s plan to kill Canada’s energy sector. He personally gave the order to cancel the Northern Gateway pipeline and killed the Energy East pipeline with red tape and regulations. Now, he is doing everything in his power to ensure that Trans Mountain is not built.

“Canadian taxpayers, energy workers and their families deserve better from their government. An Andrew Scheer government will champion Canada’s energy sector, restore Canada’s reputation as a global environmental and energy leader, and give hope to energy workers, their families and communities."
