FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 23, 2019
Ottawa, Ontario – The Honourable Erin O’Toole, Conservative Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Peter Kent, Shadow Minister for Ethics and a former Minister of State for the Americas, today released the following statement on the illegitimate presidency of Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela:
“This week thousands of Venezuelans and other opponents of Nicolás Maduro’s regime will take to the streets to protest his illegitimate rule over Venezuela. Canada’s Conservatives stand with them in opposing the extreme socialist policies that have led to the starvation and suffering of millions of citizens in a country that holds tremendous promise.
“This is why we call on Canada to be a leading voice at this week’s special meeting of the permanent council of the Organization of American States (OAS), and to call upon all countries of the OAS to reject the illegitimate Maduro regime and demand free and fair elections monitored by OAS member countries as soon as possible.
“Conservatives have always recognized that the Maduro regime has little or no interest in guaranteeing the freedom, human rights and prosperity of Venezuelans. This is why we introduced Motion 128, which was passed in Parliament to recognize that the extreme socialist policies and dictatorial rule of the Nicolás Maduro and Hugo Chavez regimes have imposed immeasurable suffering on the people of Venezuela.
“Maduro’s countless human rights offences are also an example of why we introduced and helped pass Canada’s Magnitsky sanctions law, which is now being used to punish and isolate Venezuela’s worst human rights offenders – including Maduro himself.
“Finally, it is clear that Venezuela’s National Assembly is the only remaining legitimate, democratic institution in the country, which is why many nations are looking to support the National Assembly and its work for the Venezuelan people. We urge the OAS to work with National Assembly President Juan Guaidó and members of the National Assembly to support their efforts for free and fair elections.
“Canada’s Conservatives will always defend the principles of freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, and we stand with the people of Venezuela against the oppressive and illegitimate Maduro regime.”
