Conservatives React to Environment Commissioner’s Spring Report on Salmon Farming

Conservative Party of Canada | April 24, 2018

OTTAWA, ON – Conservative Shadow Minister for Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard, Todd Doherty, and Deputy Shadow Minister Mel Arnold today issued the following statement in reaction to the Environment Commissioner’s Spring Report on Salmon Farming:

“Today’s report from the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development examining fisheries management under the Trudeau government confirms that the Liberals are failing to protect pacific salmon.

“The report’s alarming conclusion that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans is not monitoring the health of wild fish is completely unacceptable.

“Not only has the Trudeau government failed to deliver its promises of fully implementing recommendations from the Cohen Commission report and taking concrete action to restore Pacific wild salmon stocks, it is also clearly failing its responsibilities to regulate and manage fisheries.

“The Liberals have repeatedly told Canadians that they have listened, that they share their concerns, today’s report proves this just isn’t the case.

“Canada’s Conservatives recognize the ecological, cultural and economic values of Canada’s pacific salmon. We will continue to stand up for all British Columbians who depend on this important resource.”
