CONSERVATIVES SUPPORT PEACEKEEPING MISSION IN UKRAINE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, ON – James Bezan, Shadow Minister for National Defence, today issued a statement in support of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s request to the United Nations (UN) General Assembly for a peacekeeping mission in eastern Ukraine:

“Conservatives have always stood with Ukraine, especially in the face of ongoing aggression from Russia. As President Poroshenko reiterated yesterday, a UN peacekeeping mission would go a long way to making sure that Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is safe from further aggression from Vladimir Putin’s regime. That’s why Conservatives first called for a UN peacekeeping mission to eastern Ukraine on November 9, 2017.

“Ukraine continues to face an illegal armed invasion and the seizure of their territory by Russian aggressors and proxies. As a result, President Poroshenko has made multiple official requests to the United Nations to deploy a peacekeeping mission in the Donbas region of Ukraine. Ukraine has already requested help directly from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, but unfortunately his government has failed to respond with any meaningful action.

“Canada strongly supported the people of Ukraine when their territorial integrity was threatened five years ago and the duty to support and protect free and sovereign peoples should not diminish with time.

“A Conservative government led by Andrew Scheer will continue to support the people of Ukraine when their territorial integrity is threatened. The defence of Ukraine’s sovereignty should be a priority for Canada’s government on the international stage.”
