FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, issues statement on the Feast of the Assumption:
“Today, Christians in Canada and around the world are celebrating the Assumption, an important feast day honouring the Virgin Mary’s entrance into Heaven at the end of her earthly life.
“The Catholic Church teaches ‘that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.’ For centuries, the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox traditions have celebrated this feast as the Dormition of the Theotokos, the falling asleep of the Mother of God. It is commemorated in different ways across many Christian traditions: for the Anglican Church of Canada, it is the Falling Asleep of the Blessed Virgin Mary; for Lutherans, the Feast of Mary, Mother of our Lord.
“As Canadian Christians celebrate the Dormition and Assumption, we appreciate the many ways in which our diverse Christian communities have influenced our society. Representing a multitude of unique traditions and cultural origins, and drawing from nations the world over, Christianity has left an indelible mark on our history, culture, and heritage.
“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, please accept my best wishes for a blessed feast day.”
