FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON – The Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, the Honourable Andrew Scheer, issued the following statement to remember the heroes of the Heavenly Hundred:
“Today, Ukraine marks the fifth anniversary of a bloody crackdown on the innocent men and women in Kyiv during the last days of the Revolution of Dignity in 2014. These brave Euromaidan protestors have become known as the Heavenly Hundred (Небесна Сотня).
“Their ultimate sacrifice for Ukraine’s brighter democratic future will forever be remembered and cherished by all friends of Ukraine, both in Canada and around the world. We in Canada admire the dedication of the Euromaidan movement to build a prosperous and independent Ukraine, full of opportunities for future generations. Their courage and patriotism will forever be associated with Ukraine’s efforts to break away from foreign oppression and domination and with its hope for a better future within the European family of nations.
“We must also remember and acknowledge the courage of Ukrainian men and women in uniform, who, with support and training from the Canadian Armed Forces, for five long years have been bravely defending their homeland from Vladimir Putin’s illegal invasion of eastern parts of Ukraine. And we must never forget about those who struggle as a result of the illegal occupation and attempted annexation of the Crimea, especially Crimean Tatars and Ukrainians, who were forced to flee their homes and leave everything behind due to persecutions and arbitrary detentions.
“Canada’s Conservatives have always stood proudly with Ukraine throughout history. It was under a Conservative government that Canada became the first Western nation to recognize Ukraine’s independence in 1991. And since the onset of the Revolution of Dignity and the beginning of the armed conflict in Ukraine, inflicted by the regime in Moscow, Conservatives have always been crystal clear: we will never recognize Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea, or tolerate its occupation of the Donbas. Let us also not forget that it was our Conservative Prime Minister who told Vladimir Putin to his face to get out of Ukraine.
“Conservatives have always taken meaningful action in support of Ukraine. In November of 2017 we announced our support for a Canadian-led peacekeeping mission, and it was our previous Conservative government that imposed the most meaningful and powerful sanctions against the Russian regime amongst G-7 nations.
“Ukrainians can always count on Canada’s Conservatives to remain their strong friend and ally, and to continue to support a prosperous, strong and free Ukraine.
“ Слава Україні! Героям слава!”
