The Hon. Andrew Scheer, the Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, issues statement for Imamat Day
JULY 11, 2018 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of the Canada’s Conservatives, issued the following statement:
“On this day, Ismaili Muslims in Canada and all across the world rejoice in the anniversary of the ascension of His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan in becoming the Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. This anniversary known as Imamat Day, is a celebration dedicated to strengthening one’s spirituality and renewing one’s commitment to the faith.
“The Aga Khan and Canada remain allies in the promotion of human rights, pluralism and international development. The important bond we share was exemplified by Prime Minister Stephen Harper rewarding the Aga Khan with an honorary Canadian citizenship, who was notably the first spiritual leader to address both houses of Parliament. The Aga Khan is devoted to eradicating poverty, fighting for accessible education, and providing the basic necessities like water and health care to his people and those all around the world.
“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I would like to extend my sincerest Imamat Day wishes to Ismaili Muslims across Canada, and offer my congratulations to His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan on the 61st anniversary of his accession as Imam.
