AUGUST 15, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, issues the following statement to mark Indian Independence Day:

“Today, we join Indo-Canadians across Canada in celebrating the 71st anniversary of India’s independence. For generations, Indo-Canadians have played an important role in building Canadian society.

“India has long been an example of pluralistic democracy and economic opportunity, and continues to play an important role on the world stage. With a population of over 1 billion people, India’s foreign and economic policies have helped foster international peace and security, and have lifted millions of people out of poverty.

“India is a nation that Canadians are proud to call a friend, and like Canada is a country of significant diversity. Canada has been built by people from all over the world coming here to enjoy the freedom, prosperity and equality that our country offers. Our long standing partnership with India is based on these common values.

“Canada is home to over one million people of Indian descent. Indo-Canadians have made tremendous contributions to Canada’s success and help keep Canada strong and prosperous. Conservatives will continue to recognize and celebrate the contributions made to Canada by people from diverse backgrounds that have enriched our history and our society.

“On this joyous occasion, we celebrate India’s past, present and future.

“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I want to extend my best wishes to everyone celebrating.

“Happy India Independence Day!"
