FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, ON – The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, issued the following statement ahead of the House of Commons vote on supporting Yazidi refugees:
“We have learned through media reports and discussions with the Yazidi community that bureaucratic red tape is preventing Yazidi women in Canada from sponsoring family members who had previously been held captive ISIS. Instead of prioritizing the reunification of survivors of ISIS, the Prime Minister has instead used resources to reach out to known terrorists seeking to come to our country.
“Today, Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives are calling for immediate action from the Trudeau government. This includes expediting the cases of Yazidi family members, extending the time period on the One Year Window of Opportunity Provision if family members presumed dead have been found living a year after the provision ends, using the same definition of family member as the Safe Third Country Agreement for genocide survivors and presenting a real plan to bring ISIS terrorists to justice.
“Never again means taking action to prevent and stop genocide. Canadians deserve a government that will not hesitate to take a principled stand against those who commit the worst crimes against humanity.
“The Yazidi community cannot wait any longer. The Prime Minister must take action today to respond to the needs of the world’s most vulnerable."
Nafiya Naso, Spokesperson for the Canadian Yazidi Association:
“The Canadian Yazidi community across the country is grateful for the rescue of many of our people from genocide, but more must be done. We call upon the Government Canada to take the necessary steps to expeditiously reunite Yazidi families with their loved ones and allow them the opportunity to live a successful and productive life in Canada. Without an effective family reunification program, resettlement and integration will not succeed for these traumatized families."
