OTTAWA, ON – Todd Doherty, Shadow Minister for Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, issued the following statement regarding Justin Trudeau’s failure to provide new ships for the Canadian Coast Guard:
“The Canadian Coast Guard provides invaluable safety, emergency response, icebreaking and navigational services to communities across Canada. To fulfill these responsibilities, the Canadian Coast Guard needs a new and modern fleet of vessels able to adapt to the challenges of a maritime nation such as Canada.
“The reality is that under the Trudeau government, the Canadian Coast Guard will not receive these vessels. Coast Guard officials have confirmed that three used icebreakers recently purchased as an interim solution will be used for the next 15 to 20 years.
“This is unacceptable. By failing to provide the necessary equipment for our men and women in uniform, Justin Trudeau has jeopardized the safety of Canadian citizens and done irreparable harm to the economies which rely on the services provided by the Canadian Coast Guard.
“Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives will continue to hold Justin Trudeau accountable when he fails to keep his promises.”
