Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, issued the following statement:
“When the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship tabled the 2018 Immigration Levels Plan, he claimed that the Trudeau government would focus on economic immigration for the year ahead. Seven months later, it is clear that Justin Trudeau has failed to make the necessary policy decisions to ensure that Canada’s immigration system continues to operate in accordance with the levels plan, and in a planned, orderly and safe manner.
“Every other day, we hear about new issues arising as a result of Justin Trudeau’s lack of leadership on the immigration file. Whether it is having families stuck on the tarmac because border and customs agents have been re-assigned to process illegal border crossers, or cities and provinces asking for federal assistance to cover the costs of social services for these individuals, it is clear the Trudeau government has no plan.
“Justin Trudeau’s failure to close the loophole in the Safe Third Country Agreement and designate the entire border as an official point of entry means that the world’s most vulnerable, and those who want to play by the rules are being forced to wait longer. This includes the thousands of privately-sponsored refugees who are languishing in UNHRC camps, the families who are waiting to reunite with their loved ones, and the caregivers who have worked in Canada for years and are stuck in the queue waiting permanent residency.
“Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives will continue to advocate for a compassionate and fair immigration system, and hold Justin Trudeau accountable for his inability to keep the most basic functions of our immigration system working.”
