Justin Trudeau’s failure to manage immigration system leading to travel delays for Canadians: Conservatives

Conservative Party of Canada | May 17, 2018

Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and Pierre Paul-Hus, Shadow Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, issued the following statement about the delays at Toronto Pearson International Airport as resources are moved to address the illegal border crossings in Quebec.

“As we head into the May long weekend and the busy summer travel season, Canadians are now learning that they will face travel delays at Toronto Pearson International Airport and through official land border crossings in Ontario. According to media reports, this stems directly from Justin Trudeau’s failure to manage a planned immigration system.

“First, Justin Trudeau reallocated immigration officers to process illegal border crossers, forcing families to wait longer for reunification and thousands of privately-sponsored refugees to languish in UNHCR camps. Now, the Trudeau government is re-assigning border and customs agents in the Greater Toronto Area to process illegal border crossers, meaning longer wait times and delays for Canadians travelling this summer.

“The Prime Minister has spent hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on band-aid solutions to deal with his inability to manage Canada’s immigration system, and has thus far failed to present a plan to manage our borders.

“Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives will continue to advocate for a compassionate and fair immigration system, hold Justin Trudeau accountable, and call for the Safe Third Country loophole to be closed by designating the entire Canada-U.S. border as an official point of entry.”
