FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, issued the following statement:
“Today, I am pleased to extend my best wishes to everyone in Canada and around the world celebrating the 73rd anniversary of Korea's independence from Japanese colonialism at the end of the Second World War. Today, we also celebrate the Republic of Korea’s achievements, and recognize the immense contributions of Korean-Canadians to Canada’s beautiful and pluralistic society.
“Also known as the ‘Gwangbokjeol’, or ‘National Liberation Day of Korea’, this occasion serves as a day of reflection on South Korea’s achievements as an economic leader and as a strong and stable democratic nation.
“Canada shares a special friendship with South Korea. Canada played an important role in securing Korea’s continued freedom and independence, as over 26,000 Canadians served during the Korean War, of whom more than 500 gave their lives. We also recognize the more than 7,000 Canadian soldiers who remained in South Korea on peace-keeping duties after the signing of the Armistice.
“Canada is home to a vibrant Korean community, and our friendship with South Korea continually grows, as highlighted by the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement implemented by our Conservative government in 2015.
“On behalf of the Canada’s Conservatives, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to everyone celebrating the 73rd anniversary of South Korea's Independence.
“Happy National Liberation Day of Korea!”
