The Hon. Andrew Scheer, the Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, issues statement to mark Nayrouz
SEPTEMBER 11, 2018
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, ON – The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, issued the following statement on Nayrouz:
“Today, Coptic Christians in Canada and across the world will gather with friends and family to welcome and celebrate Nayrouz, the Coptic New Year.
“Marking the first day of the Coptic month of Tout, the ‘Feast of El-Nayrouz’ also commemorates the countless number of Copts who were persecuted for their faith, particularly under Roman rule in Egypt. Remembering the martyrs who sacrificed their lives, Coptic Christians have successfully preserved their rich faith and traditions throughout the centuries.
“As events in recent years have so painfully shown, this occasion serves as a reminder that even today, many religious communities, including the Coptic community continue to face persecution in the Middle East and around the world. This is simply unacceptable.
“Canada’s Conservatives will always support religious freedom and stand up for everyone’s fundamental right to practice their own religion.
“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to all Coptic Canadians celebrating a peaceful Nayrouz!”
