Statement by the Hon. Peter Kent on the 28th Anniversary of Tiananmen Square
June 4, 2017
Ottawa, ON - The Hon. Peter Kent, the Critic for Foreign Affairs, issued the following statement:
"On behalf of the Official Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, I join with Chinese citizens around the world to mark the 28th anniversary of the violent crackdown of peaceful demonstrators in and around Beijing's Tiananmen Square on June 4th, 1989.
"Chinese citizens have the right to enjoy freedom of speech, assembly and association. The crackdown of individuals peacefully expressing their views by the Chinese government is deeply troubling.
"On behalf of the Official Opposition, we urge China to break its silence on the events that occurred in Tiananmen Square 28 years ago. By publicly acknowledging a difficult past, nations can move towards a more prosperous and harmonious future."
