OTTAWA – DECEMBER 13, 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, the Hon. Andrew Scheer, issued the following statement on the occasion of the Aga Khan’s Birthday:

“I would like to extend my warmest wishes to His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan on the occasion of his birthday, and to all Ismailis here in Canada and around the world who are celebrating.

“The Aga Khan is a beloved spiritual leader and Imam to millions of Shia Ismailis. Today, we honour the many sacrifices he has made to better the lives of Ismaili communities across the world.

“His Highness was welcomed to address Parliament by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper in 2014 where he was recognized for his lifelong advocacy for humanitarianism, pluralism and tolerance.

“This is a very special year because it marks 60 years since His Highness the Aga Khan became the Imam of Shia Ismaili Muslims around the world. We celebrate this milestone and congratulate him on his many years of tireless work to better society. “Canada is very fortunate to have a special friendship and strong relationship with the Aga Khan. He is the epitome of a great humanitarian and leader, exemplifying true compassion.

“On behalf of the Official Opposition and Conservative Party of Canada, we join Ismaili communities around the world in wishing His Highness a happy birthday and congratulating him on his Diamond Jubilee year. We hope this year brings him joy and peace.”
