Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Erin O’Toole, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Garnett Genuis, Deputy Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, issued the following statement calling on Justin Trudeau to act on the Liberal government’s foreign policy reversal and take immediate steps to hold the Iranian government accountable:
“For nearly three years, Justin Trudeau has repeatedly signaled his intention to ‘re-engage’ with Iran. Instead of showing leadership on the world stage and being a strong voice for freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law, the Prime Minister has continued to make efforts to enhance relationships with the repressive Iranian regime.
“While we are pleased that the Prime Minister is now listening to thousands of Canadians, we remain concerned that this is yet another example of the Trudeau Liberals adopting a position simply because it suits their political interests.
“In fact, just last month Justin Trudeau’s Senators defeated Conservative legislation that would have seen the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) rightfully punished for its sponsorship of terrorism and its direct involvement in the murder, torture, and incarceration of Canadian citizens.
“Canada’s Conservatives are calling on Justin Trudeau to immediately list the IRGC as a terrorist entity under the Criminal Code. Moreover, the human rights abuses of various Iranian officials are well known. The Prime Minister has the power to sanction these members under the Magnitsky Law, and should do so immediately.”
