Justin Trudeau Is Failing Victims of Crime

Conservative Party of Canada | July 20, 2018

Ottawa, Ontario – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, Conservative Shadow Minister for Justice issued the following statement after another high-profile case was thrown out of court due to a lack of judges available to hear it:

“Justin Trudeau and the Liberals continue to risk Canadians’ safety and let criminals walk free by failing to name judges. Despite repeated pleas from Conservatives to fill judicial vacancies, there were 58 judicial vacancies as of July 1st.

“The Liberals have even failed to name half of the new judges they announced just last year. This is simply unacceptable for victims who are revictimized every time a criminal walks free. There is no excuse for Justin Trudeau’s failure to name judges. Justice delayed is justice denied for victims of crime.

“The Liberals lack of action has had serious consequences across Canada. Today, we learned that five men accused in a $13 million fraud case in Toronto had their charges stayed because there was not a judge available to hear their case until January. Recently, an Ontario man who was found guilty of armed robbery had his case stayed because it took too long to sentence him. Earlier this year, a notorious gang leader in Calgary was released to the public because of delays. There are many more troubling examples of criminals going free as a result of the Liberals’ failure to name judges.

“Canadians want to know why Justin Trudeau is risking their safety and jeopardizing our justice system. His failure to fill these vacancies is undermining confidence in the very same system that Canadians rely on to keep them safe.”
