FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, ON – Stephanie Kusie, Shadow Minister for Democratic Institutions, issued a statement following the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs’ meeting to study safeguarding the 2019 general election and the security and intelligence threats to elections:
“The Minister’s testimony today made it more clear than ever that the Trudeau government is failing to protect Canada’s democratic process from the threat of foreign interference.
“Conservatives have repeatedly asked the government to clearly outline how they plan to monitor cyber threats and regulate social media platforms to prevent foreign influence in public discourse, while respecting Canadians’ fundamental right of free speech.
“Media reports have confirmed that foreign actors are already using social media platforms to influence elections and spread misinformation about our resource sector and immigration system. Canadians deserve to know exactly what criteria the Liberals intend to use to identify serious threats during the next election.
“Conservatives will continue to hold Justin Trudeau’s government to account and ensure that our democratic processes are protected from foreign influence.”
