Trudeau Liberals Still Failing to Address Canola Crisis

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, ON – Luc Berthold, Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Agri-food, Erin O’Toole, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Dean Allison, Shadow Minister for International Trade Diversification, released the following statement regarding the Trudeau Liberals’ ongoing failure to address Canada’s canola crisis:

“Earlier this week, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer outlined three concrete steps that Justin Trudeau could take immediately in order to stand up for Canadian canola farmers and restore trade with China. By failing to appoint an Ambassador to China and launch a formal WTO trade complaint against China, Justin Trudeau’s weakness and poor judgment on the world stage continues.

“It has been two months since the Chinese government banned imports of Canadian canola. During that time, due to market uncertainty the canola sector has lost approximately a billion dollars and farmers have been forced to make difficult decisions regarding this spring’s planting season.

“While Conservatives support increasing emergency financial aid for producers, it is unfortunate that it has taken months of public outcry from Premiers, the Leader of the Official Opposition, and canola farmers for the Prime Minister to take any action.

“Under the failed leadership of Justin Trudeau, Canada’s reputation on the world stage has been diminished and Canada’s agriculture sector is paying the price. Conservatives will stand up for Canada’s world class canola sector, pull Canadian taxpayer dollars from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, and restore our strong and proud reputation on the world stage.”
