FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, issued a statement following comments from Canada’s Ambassador to China on the extradition case of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou:
“It is completely unacceptable for Ambassador John McCallum, a political appointee and former Liberal cabinet minister, to interfere in an independent judicial case.
"As a spokesperson of the Government of Canada, Ambassador McCallum’s comments raise grave concerns about the politicization of this case and serious questions about whether or not they were made at the direction of the Prime Minister’s Office.
“However, given how Ambassador McCallum’s comments undermine the integrity of our judicial system and how vital these proceedings are to the rule of law, he should be held accountable. If I were Prime Minister, I would fire Ambassador McCallum.
“Further, I call on Justin Trudeau to immediately clarify if Ambassador McCallum’s comments reflect his government’s position on Ms. Wanzhou’s case and to do everything in his power to resolve the ongoing dispute with China."
