TRUDEAU MUST COOPERATE WITH ETHICS COMMITTEE: SCHEER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, issued a statement ahead of the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics beginning its investigation into the SNC-Lavalin corruption scandal:

“Today, I called on Justin Trudeau to fully cooperate with the Ethics Committee’s new investigation into the SNC-Lavalin corruption scandal, which will formally begin tomorrow.

“First, Mr. Trudeau cannot abuse his power and shut down this investigation the way he did with the Justice Committee’s investigation last week. He must end his cover-up and allow this investigation to proceed.

“Second, he must allow both former Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould and former Treasury Board President Jane Philpott to speak freely about these matters.

“Over the weekend, several Liberals challenged Ms. Wilson-Raybould and Ms. Philpott to violate oaths they have taken and bypass Mr. Trudeau’s gag order in order to speak. However, Parliamentary privilege doesn’t absolve them from these oaths.

“If Mr. Trudeau has nothing to hide and if other Liberals want them to speak, he will make his permission official and waive all privilege and cabinet confidentiality so they can do so.

“If he does not, Canadians will know that he is more afraid of the truth than the consequences of covering it up.”
