Message from the Leader of the Official Opposition

JANUARY 5, 2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, ON - The Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, the Hon. Andrew Scheer, issued the following statement:

"Today, I want to offer my very best wishes to Ukrainians in Canada and around the world on the occasion of the formalization of the autocephaly of the new, unified, independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The recognition of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew, the senior hierarch in the Eastern Orthodox churches, is a historic event for the Church in Ukraine and Kievan Christianity.

"The granting of the Tomos to the newly elected primate Metropolitan Epiphanius is a recognition of the equality and dignity of Ukrainian Orthodoxy and a strong signal of support for Ukraine, as it defends itself against Kremlin-backed violence in Eastern Ukraine that continues to kill people daily.

"The formation of the new Ukrainian Orthodox Church coincides with Eastern Christmas, the Nativity of our Lord, one of the most important celebrations for Orthodoxy, which makes it even more special.

"On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, please accept my best wishes for a very special and blessed Christmas for all Ukrainian Canadians, Ukrainian Orthodox, and all those striving to defend the peace and security of Ukraine."
