FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON – The Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, the Honourable Andrew Scheer, issued the following statement on Vaisakhi:
“Today marks the holiest and most significant day for people of the Sikh religion, Vaisakhi.
“Vaisakhi commemorates the day on which the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, formed the Khalsa – a community of the faithful – in 1699. It also celebrates the fundamental principles of Sikhism, as presented through the Five Ks, including honesty, justice, courage, equality, and seva, service to others.
“Friends and family will mark this special occasion by gathering at their local Gurdwara and participating in one of the many Nagar Kirtan processions happening across the country. These community celebrations are open to all Canadians and capture the essence of the Sikh faith.
“Canada takes great pride in being home to one of the largest and most civically engaged Sikh populations in the world. Our country has been greatly enriched by the contributions of the Sikh community and we are grateful for the tremendous generosity that Sikhs have shown in helping build our country.
“Last year, I was fortunate and honoured to pay my respects at Shri Harmandur Sahib, the Golden Temple, and the holiest gurdwara for Sikhs.
“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I extend my best wishes to Sikhs in Canada and around the world celebrating Vaisakhi.
“Vaisakhi diyan lakh lakh vadhaiyan!”
