The Honourable Andrew Scheer, the Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, issues statement on Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day

MAY 18, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Andrew Scheer, the Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, issued the following statement:

“On Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day, we remember the terrible loss of life and suffering endured by the Tamil people during the Sri Lankan Civil War. It is estimated 70,000 civilians were lost during the war.

“The Conservative Party of Canada has never hesitated to raise our concerns on the lack of accountability for the serious allegations of war crimes during the Sri Lankan Civil War.

“While we recognize today as a solemn occasion, it is also an opportunity to remind all Canadians that Canada must remain a strong voice in the promotion of human rights and democratic freedom around the world.

“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I extend my deepest sympathies to all the thousands of Tamils who have found refuge in Canada and are proud to call Canada their home, as well as to all victims of the conflict that took place nine years ago. I invite all Canadians to learn more about Tamil Canadians and how they have immensely contributed to Canada’s diverse heritage."
